How did voting regulations change in the US from 1820 – 1860 and why?
Summary
Voting regulations changed numerously throughout history, especially during the time period of 1820 through the 1860's. Andrew Jackson was president from 1829 - 1837, his influence on American politics was pervasive both before and after his time in office. The years from about 1824 to 1840 have been called the "Age of Jacksonian Democracy" and the "Era of the common man". The United states was far from democratic, women could not vote and were legally under the control of their husbands. The big ordeal with voting began in the 1790's when only white male adult property owners have the right to vote. When the constitution was written, only white male property owners had the right to vote. Over the past two centuries the term "Government by the people" has become reality. During the early 1800's states gradually drop their voting requirements. Later, one's that were previously excluded from voting gained the right. During later times reforms made this process more fair and easier.

1790- Only white adult male property-owners had the right to vote.
1810- Last religious prerequisite for voting is eliminated.
1850- Property ownership and tax requirements are eliminated by 1850, almost all adult white males could vote.
1855- Connecticut adopts the nation's first literacy test for voting. Massachusetts follows suit in 1857. The tests were implemented to discriminate against Irish-Catholic immigrants.
1870- The 15th amendment is passed. It gives former slaves the right to vote and protects the voting rights of adult male citizens of any race. .
